64 years ago; you know the time before the hazards of internet pornography and curse words. The United States was busy running clearly unethical STD testing on Guatemalans.
"The sexually transmitted disease inoculation study conducted from 1946-1948 in Guatemala was clearly unethical," according to the joint statement from Clinton and Sebelius. "Although these events occurred more than 64 years ago, we are outraged that such reprehensible research could have occurred under the guise of public health. We deeply regret that it happened, and we apologize to all the individuals who were affected by such abhorrent research practices."
Wait wait wait. I thought we were in the 40's ...fighting Hitler? Not flattering him with a quality immitation.
"The Guatemala experiments, which were conducted between 1946 and 1948, never provided any useful information and the records were hidden."
Excellent! The only thing worse than practicing racial or economic based science is praticing said science that culminates to the entire value of a squashed dog turd.
In addition the the Guatemalans:
"The episode raises inevitable comparisons to the infamous Tuskegee experiment, the Alabama study where hundreds of African-American men were told they were being treated for syphilis, but in fact were denied treatment. That U.S. government study lasted from 1932 until press reports revealed it in 1972."
Okay they got me there 1932.. I guess we were just trying to beat Hitler to the punch. Bravo. (sarcasm intended)
I guess they saw this fellow around that time.
I get human testing needs to be done after a certain number of stages with non-human subjects. In other words humanrs are next on the slab; after we've gone through animal testing and managed to make something more useful than "instant-kill poison". Also this was basically the wild west days of medicine. Little oversight and in many cases no regulation at all. It's still not right to give a passing glance to such horrible practices. Not just medically but Governmentally. Being a citizen shouldn't mean you're open to unknown, unseen and well hidden testing against your own personal health.
In a day and age when information is the new currency; people need to be even more watchful as to their own morality and making sure it's checked. During the time of WW2, "Japs", Nazi's, Reds and Pinkos. America's "morality" was unfettered to challenge it was in some cases criminal, to doubt it was taboo. Perspective should be the word of the day.
"The wiseman knows that he knows nothing." The one thign I do "know". Is that no one remembers that quote when they're pushing an agenda.
That said It seems even the Greatest Generation had some serious pitfalls and lessons to be had.
